Memories of Ireland: Soda Bread

  
Being American, we are a blend of nationalities and ethnicities that make ancestry truly fascinating. I’ve enjoyed making foods from all of my homelands and today it’s Soda Bread of Ireland.

Soda Bread like so many everyday inexpensive recipes has been upgraded to the point that some is hardly recognizable. Anything more – they say – than flour, water, buttermilk and soda is… A frivolity.

The author of the attached link … Views soda bread as a remembrance of humbler times and the time of the great famine. He suggests placing it among the other breads and cakes as a remembrance at family occasions.

My daughter Karen will be presenting in Dublin, her first time back and when we see her and before she leaves… We’ll ensure she has some Irish Soda Bread made as it was meant to be!

Seafood gumbo season

  
When the cold weather moves in, the wind howls and getting chilled to the bone is a possibility. This is when a bowl of seafood gumbo (crab, shrimp, lobster and clams) over curry rice hits the spot!

Christmas rush?

  
After a lot of soul searching and trial, I finally narrowed down my choice of small handguns to #kimber. An expensive but accurate choice for defense.

What surprised me when I went to #rangemaster was the crowd inside, the almost empty racks and the depleted shelves. Despite the unusually long wait, the crowd was patient and polite…. Characteristic of this group.

Since the Islamic terrorist slaughter in San Bernardino, Californians are reevaluating their perceived conditions of risk… And found it wanting. Enough guns were sold on Black Friday to equip a new branch of the military ( interesting stat)!

The people who were shopping were : experienced gun owners, first time buyers who also wanted to sign up for courses, government and law enforcement types, and a few hunters who were miffed at the slim pickens.

California has a long way to go to protect the average citizen… Unfortunately there are entire counties that believe that the only help you deserve is on the other end of your 911 call. Good luck with that. Here’s a subjective mapping of California I found online …

Halloween and the love of little monsters #sees

  
I love all holidays, but I have a special fondness for Halloween. As a child, I remember running from house to house collecting little and big goodies. My record was three shopping bags!

Part of the fun is offering children … Some I actually know … A See’s candy bar (the Rolls Royce of treats!). Laura was serving fruit and organic juice and I was BBQ-ing sausages and garlic bread to help refresh the spooky travelers.

Where else can you demonstrate a little kindness to so many people at one time? I hope your Halloween was as fun!
