Making Life…. Beer-able!

AAAaaaAAaah Beer!

“may I live upon the bread of barley white, my ale made of grain red”
— Ancient Egyptian Prayer

This is not a tribute to drinking, getting drunk or partying… this is a tribute to the one unmistakeable contribution to civilization — beer — brought down to us over 6000 years ago by the Chinese, Sumarians, Babylonians, the Ancient Egyptians and most recently the Germans and Japanese! Of course, we can’t forget the contributions of Milwaukee! Gan bei ! (Chinese – Mandarin)

Some of the advice on the internet is a bit self-serving to people who like beer already. If you look hard enough , you can find an article somewhere that beer cures almost every ailment. I sometimes wonder if I should be winking when I read things like, “Why drinking beer is good for the planet”. The gist of this article in New Scientist is that certain beer by-products will absorb hazardous organic compounds including benzene and trichloroethylene from chemical and industrial wastewater. Good stuff to know. Don’t you feel better now that you can do something good for mother earth? Prosit! (German)

Another facinating bit of beer glorification dates back to the ancient egyptians. When scientist studied the bones of the ancient Nubians ( they once ruled Egypt) they found:

“The bones, the researchers say, contain traces of the antibiotic tetracycline. Today tetracycline is used to treat ailments ranging from acne flare-ups to urinary-tract infections. But the antibiotic only came into commercial use half a century ago. So how did tetracycline get into the Nubian bones? Armelagos and his team say they found an answer in ancient beer.”

As you can see, it pays to read National Geographic. Na zdorov’ya (Ukraine)

Southern California Trojans — it’s a ‘lifestyle!’

Two Tough Trojans? Laura and Me at the USC-UCLA Game!
Me and my Sweetheart!

The other day I was walking down our town — San Luis Obispo, California — wearing a t-shirt from my Alma Mater and a cyclist ( probably someone training for a local triathalon) passed me by and yelled, “Fight On!”. For those of you not connected to sport, this is a salutory greeting from one Trojan to another! I looked up to see him riding by all decked out in Trojan cycling attire and for one brief moment — I was transported back home to Troy, the Business School and to those I helped learn the art of ‘burn outs’ in weightlifting…. fun times. Oh yes, then, there were the football games! Continue reading “Southern California Trojans — it’s a ‘lifestyle!’”

the Mid-State Fair … a little bit of Americana

Not too many quiche, soy or veggie munchers at these festivities!Good times and Good fun. Continue reading “the Mid-State Fair … a little bit of Americana”

“Failure to Launch” is Funny, True and Preventable

Failure to Launch (French version)

If you haven’t seen “Failure to Launch”, you must see it.

Now, it’s not likely to win any Academy Awards – but then – who really wants those anyway? An Academy Award is given to folks so that they don’t feel like real losers even though their movie was a snoozer at the box office. I mean, when did a popular movie win ‘Best picture’? Hey, they’re bundling “Brokeback Mountain” with more popular movies at Best Buy hoping to move the crap.

Sorry, I digressed, back to “Failure to Launch”. This movie is about a young man (age 35) who is still living at home! Obviously, his folks want him to go and grow up … so they go through all kinds of stuff to get him move out. This is hilarious. They end up hiring a ‘professional interventionist’ to try to woo him out of the parent’s home, but it doesn’t work. As he says,” it’ll take a stick of dynamite to move me out of my parent’s home!”

I won’t give it all away, but for many parents this is way too close to home. We know folks who sold their big home and moved into a small one-bedroom apartment to escape the upcoming challenge! Some parents have even threatened to move without a forwarding address. And there are a few adult age children who even marry and have kids but never move away… but I think they are hanging around for the ‘old folks’ to ‘kick it’ as they also say in the movie. Also included — if you buy the DVD — are some minor ‘documentaries’ on the subject. The adult children — they interviewed — seem… troubled. Hmmmm…. Nancy, your behavior says something to me… are you menstruating?

the Female BrainWhat is really fun in all the nature vs. nurture debate going on is how recent discoveries in biology are causing… well… some academics to run naked into the woods screaming! I have to tell you that I just love it!

The debate is at the heart of many — excuse the expression – liberal fantasies. Some people like to believe men and women are exactly the same in all ways. I shouldn’t say this … but I have noticed a few wonderful differences. These same people will tell you that Johnny turned bad because of low self esteem, bad neighborhoods, abuse, neglect, and our evil American society.  Well, ‘environment’ does affect ‘gene’ expression, but biology has a lot to do with who we are and the studies that are coming out are showing exactly that.

In an article by Peg Tyre and Julie Scelfo of NEWSWEEK entitled, “why girls will be girls” they – in part – review a new book by Louann Brizendine called “the Female Brain.” (By the way, you can pick it up on
