the SCIENCE of Kissing!

Oh… she can dance… but can she kiss?

but can she kiss?

Three recent articles caught our eye…

1) In  Science Daily  they report that:

Research by the University at Albany  shows that information conveyed by a kiss can have profound consequences for romantic relationships, and can even be a major factor in ending one….. The UAlbany study also found sex differences in the importance and type of kissing. Males tended to kiss as a means to an end — to gain sexual favors or to reconcile. In contrast, females kiss to establish and monitor the status of their relationship, and to assess and periodically update the level of commitment on the part of a partner. ”

DEAR DAD says: You can tell so much from a kiss… it goes without saying.

2) In another study reported in Science Daily, researchers found:

Men may be more willing than women to sacrifice achievement goals for a romantic relationship…”

DEAR DAD says: Well, I think the operative word here is ‘sacrifice.” Many men are willing to sacrifice much for those they love. In Japan, there is a word for ‘working oneself to death’ … basically to support one’s family and those he loves.

3) Lastly, a disturbing article about the advice college students on getting from health care professionals.

Dr. Grossman’s book,  Unprotected: A Campus Psychiatrist Reveals How Political Correctness in Her Profession Endangers Every Student,  was published in November 2006 by Penguin Group. She has been interviewed on over 100 radio shows, the FOX News Channel, and The 700 Club. Her book has received positive reviews in The Wall Street Journal, National Review, The Weekly Standard, The American Spectator, TownHall.com, and elsewhere.”

DEAR DAD says: Are we surprised? Many colleges and universities have become less a place for learning and the free discussion of ideas and developing values than institutions of indoctrination and regimentation.

Here’s a  link to a site  that shows you how far it can go.

Never Give Up… Never Surrender!

We have always enjoyed a little quote from a Star Trek spoof entitles “Galaxy Quest”:

“As long as there is injustice, whenever a Targathian baby cries out, wherever a distress signal sounds among the stars, we’ll be there. This fine ship, this fine crew. Never give up… and never surrender!”

Sir Winston Churchill offered some advice during WWII…

“The speech was made 29 October 1941 to the boys at Harrow School. ” Never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.”

our modern Knights of this era

There is something to learn here for all of us. ‘Never give up’ is a reminder not to defeat ourselves… because if we struggle… sometimes, we win…. but if we give up, we always lose.

Jenny Craig Update… down 85 lbs

me at 234

Well… we dropped in for our weekly weigh-in at  Jenny Craig.

Somehow, when you are down 85 lbs. and nearing my goal… you wonder when to stop?

Frankly, I am feeling fine at this weight and I may drop a little more… but wearing a size 32 pair of jeans is just amazing to me! I joke that I plan to donate some of the sizes I  ‘passed through’ (including 36’s) to some of my friends who might need these ‘fat’ clothes. ha!

On the left — in case your are wondering — I am enjoying some “Biltong” that Karen brought back from South Africa. This piece came from Kruger Park and it is Springbok! Yes, very yummy!

Everyone in the family has been on Jenny Craig… and it seems like — collectively — we have lost a small Toyota.

Now… I will reward myself on Sunday with a South African ‘Bobotie’… a recipe that I have been exploring and I will post my recipe.

Her Wish Is My Command! hmmmm

Platform Bed

My wife, we’ll call her  “Laura”,  is off with our second daughter Karen in Tennessee helping Karen ‘get situated’.  Karen  is following in her mother’s footsteps in pursuing a Ph.D. and … naturally… Laura wants to help. She is good that way.

H.O.W.E.V.E.R… Laura has the habit of dropping a bomb when she leaves in the form of major ‘projects’ for me. The Latest is concerning a “Platform Bed” of which no adequate plans could be found… so I am improvising here!

I am in the middle of this project which should be complete just as she returns home … in… a … few… days. Hmmm… Is that a coincidence?

“reverse engineering” Jenny Craig!

hmmmm.... lookie lookie what I found!

I have lost almost 90 lbs and my family is jokingly ( I think) referring to me as “MAN-orexic” as though being 236 lbs is like being one of those ‘stick models with poofy lips!”  True, my size 32 jeans is hell and gone from my old 46’s… but I think that is a GOOD thing, don’t you?  Thank you, Jenny Craig.

However, this now presents a ‘problem’ as I enter apon unknown territory into what dieters refer to as ‘maintenance.’ Jenny has a plan for this… and for $39 a year, it’s a bargain. Regretfully, part of the program is ‘cooking on your own.’

In truth, we always do a certain amount of preparing already… ‘super sizing’ the salads and dinner time veggies helps curb my big appetite. However, I have become quite fond of their ‘complete start cereal’ ….and wondered… how I would get along without it?

So, I put my ‘marketing hat’ back on and ‘theorized’ that Jenny wasn’t probably baking up her stuff …but having other folks prepare to her specifications. I thought, what better way to come up with your own ‘proprietary’ cereal than to take a few assorted packages of other folks stuff and mix it up as your own.  Clever, girl ….. Anyway, that’s my theory.

I then took the bag of Jenny Craig ‘Complete Start’ cereal and separated it into what seemed to be it’s component ingredients …. and I found: an ‘all bran’ , a ‘flake’, a ‘puffed wheat’ and a crunchy nugget that — to me — tasted of almonds.  So, I began to look for the components in other cereals in order to reproduce a reasonable ‘facsimile’.

It’s tough to match Jenny’s low fat and high fiber combination… but I think I got breakfast down… but the other meals? Sheeeeesh…. I think I’ll be on Jenny for a while down the road… which is all fine by me… I love the ‘individually frosted’ chocolate cakes!
