the City Of Berkeley just got Uglier

where all the weirdos call home
Just when you thought it couldn’t get any weirder in Berkeley… their City Council decided to make a grand stand against the Military. Oh, it might have gotten a series of chuckles … I think I will just drive on by from now on. Here’s what their mayor had to say:

“I believe in the Code Pink cause. The Marines don’t belong here, they shouldn’t have come here, and they should leave,” said Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates ….

John McCain Rocks!

Rudy endorses john
I have nothing but admiration for Rudy and his endorsement of John McCain is nothing less than a real class act.

Having lived and worked in crime capital of New York City in the 70’s and witnessed the transformation under Rudy … I was amazed! His leadership after 911 was no less spectacular. Here’s an excerpt of an email Rudy sent to everyone who supported him:

‘Our nation’s next President must understand and make a commitment to keep us on offense in the Terrorists’ War on Us. He must understand that stimulating our economy requires cutting taxes, because you make better decisions with your money than Washington bureaucrats. He must be committed to ending illegal immigration and securing our borders. And he must use free-market principles to make health care more affordable for all Americans.

I believe John McCain is that man. He is the right leader to move us forward, unite our party and transform Washington. I hope that you will join me in supporting him to be the next President of the United States.

As I look forward to the road ahead, I am optimistic because I believe America’s best days are still to come. Our country has a bright future, but we must work together to ensure that our shared prosperity creates new and better opportunities for us all.’

Best Wishes,

Rudy

Hire Norm Chow!

Norms Big Playbook

Unless you were living on another planet, you probably didn’t hear that the Tennessee Titans Professional Football Team put offensive strategist Norm Chow on ‘waivers.’

Frankly, I don’t disagree with the decision. Tennessee really can’t use someone of Norm’s background…. someone with a wide repertoire of offensive plays. But to be fair, the team has to have the personnel to take advantage of his intellect.

As someone said, the Titans have but two plays… ‘slant right’ .. and the proverbial ‘broken play.’

Well, Tennessee’s loss is someone else’s gain!

UPDATE: Hmmmm…. looks like UCLA hired on ol ‘SC Norm Chow! Interesting match up… Norm’s offensive skills against Pete Carrol’s defensive playbook.

Vanessa Redgrave an idiot for all seasons

Who's side is she really on?

Okay, it’s time to sound a little political again.

Vanessa Redgrave may sound to some like a Joan of the leftist Arc … to me she just doesn’t make any sense at all.

In history, there had to be those who opened the gates of Cartage in the name of peace to the Roman armies, others tries to negotiate with Genghis Khan and still others tried to appease the likes of Adolf Hitler and Persian tyrants… all with predictably disastrous results!

So why am I surprised that Vanessa Redgrave after a life of supporting the bad guys is now reaching out her peaceful hand to Al Qaeda terrorists?

Having watched Vanessa for years, I really can’t figure out whether she is a naive idealist… or just hates everybody in the world but ‘the bad guys?’

Steroids in Athletics

I am constantly amazed by people who are shocked to learn that ‘steroids’ or any performance enhancing substances can be found in athletics. Where have they been? Do they really understand the history? Probably not.

Athletes have endeavored to enhance their performance since ancient times. In the days of ancient Greece, athletes would chew on animal testicles to extract testosterone. Yes, it worked. Later, athletes found that small doses of certain poisons acted as stimulants and finally in the 1930’s, Adolf Windaus received the Nobel Prize for discovering steroids ( to his credit, he also discovered Vitamin D). Steroids have been chronicled as a part of virtually every Olympic Game since their discovery.

So, we might wonder, who would want to use or benefit from steroids?

Every athlete in every sport — not just baseball players — could benefit in ways large and small…. even whimpy soccer players. It doesn’t seem to matter if the sport has money or fame… athletes appear to be looking for any edge. However, the significant — if somewhat anecdotal — heavy physical long term side effects of many performance enhancing drugs are daunting. However, the long term issues have little play with young athletes; after all, they are ‘immortal’ in their own eyes.

So, what can be done?

Outside of draconian penalties and public embarrassment… the motivation for the little edge is almost overwhelming to many athletes who will accept almost any risk as part of the game.

However, as a coach, it is important to teach athletes to look for long term success beyond athletics…. because most of us won’t make it to the ‘big leagues’… and very few make it where they can make any money. So, keeping an eye on the long term prize will make them happier and ultimately more successful in life.

One still wants to be around and in ‘the game’ when they are 60.
