Do something different, just for fun!

Laura's fun timeI am reminded about an old Star Trek that stated “the more complex the mind, the more the necessity for the simplicity of play.”

For folks whose work is less active, they might find more pleasure if their hobbies and fun activities contain an largely physical role.

Some of my more intelligent and sedentary relatives would spend their non working hours rebuilding their home, painting and gardening…

As for me, I have always enjoyed doing things very different that my true vocation. Investing my time exploring new aspects of our world has always had an interest.

By the way, speaking of fun, although I am not at all a soccer fan… I congratulate all of Iraq over their recent victory!

On a related note….

“The most spiritual men, as the strongest, find their happiness where others would find their destruction: in the labyrinth, in hardness against themselves and others, in experiments. Their joy is self-conquest. Difficult tasks are a privilege to them, to play with burdens that crush others, a recreation. They are the most venerable kind of man: that does not preclude their being the most cheerful and the kindliest.”

PS. My wife just finished painting the kitchen…. she had fun doing it… but the important thing was that … I didn’t have to do it!

‘Real’ Men

a few good real men and women in Iraq!

Psychologists and feminists try to show how men are changing, being affected by the rising aspirations of women and the widening range of behaviors that are now being loosely referred to as acceptably ‘masculine.’ Unfortunately, too much of this is the wishful thinking of political folks who want to ‘prove’ that men and women really aren’t all that different… and that ‘gender’ is a ‘culturally constructed’ identity. Real men find this all so amusing….as do Real women.

Some people define ‘real men’ as ‘retros’ who cling to traditional values and attitudes regarding masculinity. However, even by the most liberal of interpretations, this still accounts for 60% or so of all the men worldwide. This is not a insignificant group to ignore… or dare I say, it is not an insignificant ‘market.’

Leave it to business folks to show why the understanding of the ‘traditional’ male image is so important today. By appealing to traditional men — called “retros” — in the study, advertisers and marketers are reaching the largest single subset of the male population and these folks will carry a heavy influence on the future.

Leo Burnett — the famous advertising folks whose symbol is an apple ( during the early American depression, it was joked that someday Leo would be selling them rather than giving them away) came out  with a study  that asks the rhetorical question: “are marketers missing real men?” The simple answer is “yes”… with the exception of the great super bowl ads…. but then, beer companies know who buys their products!

Here’s the bottom line on the study:

“…the majority of men surveyed (60 percent) aren’t caught up in this gender debate and live by a more traditional set of standards for assessing their masculinity. This larger group is more focused on defining themselves in the eyes of other men, largely by seeking respect and admiration for being successful in their professional life on one end of the spectrum, or their personal, family life on the other. The study dubs these men on the “Traditional Male Spectrum” as Power Seekers and Patriarchs, respectively, and contends they are largely overlooked by popular culture, the media and marketers.”

So what do I think? Although biology may not be destiny, and that our nature may be shaped via those who nurture us… science is beginning to demonstrate the uncomfortable notion that who we are is determined significantly by our biology. The concepts that gender and masculinity are socially constructed are dissolving and a science based understanding of our true nature is becoming better understood.

Regardless of the future roles of men on the planet, real men will continue to exist, in a large part, because real women will demand it.

Harry Potter Survives and Thrives!!!? (maybe)

hmmmm.... is it too good to be true?

If you are a Harry Potter Fan, then the release of Book 7 has been anticipated for a long time. Supposedly the conclusion was developed back in 1999 and from the ‘leaks’ the ending should thrill the fans… and probably draw Snapish snarls from the critics. However, as with some forces of nature, critics might want to step aside or risk losing it all.

We have five books coming to our home — 2 deluxe editions, 2 standard from Scholastic ( the US Publisher) and one copy from the UK (Bloomsberry)… unfortunately… alas… none of them signed. However, I can see no one doing anything this weekend but reading “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.”

I won’t pass along the leaks… but they are out there along with a bunch of hints. The  New York Times came out with a tantalizing review  if you want some hints without the truth. But if you can’t stand it… the info is out there… plus a lot of false leads.

We’ll see if it comes true on Saturday!

PS… my wife Laura was right — if true — about Ron & Hermione… that’s all I am going to say!

Ostrich — part of a healthy & fun diet!

Amazing Nutritional information on Ostrich Meat!

I have enjoyed Ostrich before, but with my daughter Karen taking some time to intern in South Africa, I have reawakened to some of the wonders of that part of the world. One of those delicious items is Ostrich meat. The chart above tells the healthy story: higher in protein, lower in fats, calories and cholesterol …and as Karen describes it… Ostrich meat tastes like something between beef and chicken for flavor, but then a lot of that has to do with the preparation & seasonings, too.

Although civilization is finally making its way into our tiny community of San Luis Obispo in California, I still have to travel to Monterey or Watsonville to pick up some Ostrich meat. Although it takes a big chunk of the day, it is well worth it. I won’t be making an “Ostriducken” ( A chicken inside a Turkey inside an Ostrich)… I do have a few great tasting ideas.

There is a  place in Watsonville  where you can buy Ostrich meat. They even provide addresses to local shops along the central coast of California.
