nothing like a great one pot meal!

I know some folks are going to tease me a bit about this particular cookbook as it has been out for a while, but I won’t by just any book and this one intrigued me. Why, you might ask? Simply, I am really not interested in the so many cook books that offer 30 meals in thirty minutes with three ingredients. Hey, I can do that too: take a steak add salt and pepper and grill! Drink beer. Oooops… does beer count as a 4th ingredient?

However, I am very fond of one pot meals be they  the South African Potjeikos (‘Potjies’) or the many from around the world!

Chef Boulud has put together a wonderful assortment of one pot meals ( some could even be adapted to the crock pot)… and a couple have caught my eye: one was chicken with a Tamarind sauce and the other involved oxtails and pears … very intriguing!

Every family has favorite recipes that are almost iconic and recognizable to those who know you. Holiday recipes say more about you than the car you choose to drive or the neighborhood you live in… because recipes — more than anything else — are deeply personal. What are yours?

This holiday season, my daughters want to have a fun Greek Night ! No, this is not the kind where people wear togas. It is a time when we prepare some wonderful food and reflect on recent activities.

The names may be unfamiliar, but the taste will speak of home!

buy California Milk while you can

Who says nobody gives you something for free? CLICK on the picture above and travel to the REAL CALIFORNIA MILK site and pick up some milk and cheese coupons!

My daughter Karla knows I am very fond of the milk our dairy folk produce in California and she drew the lovely drawing of me milking a cow the old fashioned way. Part of my fondness is that there really is a difference in taste, even the non-fat milk tastes richer and thicker!

This holiday season, I am looking forward to making my version of George Washington’s Eggnog with real California Heavy Cream!

Here’s my recipe!

the hunt for real food, big guns and safaris

Boys and Girls, I am now going to tell you a story much like Chef Gordon Ramsay might do… but without the required expletives. Steaks do not come a steak tree, turkeys are not grown without heads and virtually everything that we prefer to eat once roamed, flew or swam somewhere. Oh yes, they may have also slithered or slimed there way along.

The article I wrote for a local on-line news service is on the joy of hunting for a great meal and how it can go from the wild to your dinning table. Although I am a hunter, I never thought I would have the opportunity to go on a Safari for really large game… but thanks to well timed events… here I go!
