USC Crushes UCLA with Style!

new Trojan Banner I've seen around a lot lately

Well… in all my memory, I can’t remember a USC-UCLA dual meet that wasn’t fraught with controversy. Last year, it was the ‘lost’ long jump results that would have given USC the win… this year it was the long jump again… but it went USC’s way. Although it was a USC home meet, there was some talk about a former UCLA hurdler turned judge who disqualified the USC athlete who was the big winner… and it goes on and on. Naturally, UCLA had their own take on the subject. I’d have more sympathy for my former team if I hadn’t watched the circus of deliberate distractions happening while my daughter was trying to throw last year for ‘SC… Karen’s tough and she won anyway. We got a big chuckle later watching and listening to the film of folks trying to razz Karen. Champions don’t beat themselves.

In issue 176 of Karen’s Blog… she writes about the USC-UCLA meet… “It doesn’t get better than this!”.

One of the things people ask you about this duel … and I was asked three times at the meet… “How did you do when you competed in it?” In those days, UCLA won so infrequently against ‘SC that they passed out silver track shoes if you scored any points! They stopped this after 1972. As for me, I only lost once against the now former Trojan record holder in the shot… and only lost once to a Trojan as a freshman in the discus. One kindly older gent asked me why I wasn’t on the all-time Trojan list… some nice folks forget. Yep, I threw for the other guys.

It is always a great meet.

Fight On!

PS. UCLA needs someone (Nigel, perhaps) to help them design better uniforms… the old ones were much better….. and the sweats were very cool.

Oh yes... the old uniforms were much better

the Male & Female Brain… part deux

Laura is as I have always remembered herI am reminded each and every time Laura shoves a test or a Link towards me of that happy comment on a poster of my daughter’s… “to find happiness: RULE number 1 — marry the right person.”

I feel very fortunate.

Laura provided a link on a post of her’s that started quite a discussion in our home. One of the ‘tests’ is provocatively entitled: SEX I.D. : find out how your mind works.

Here I am near my 55th birthday earlier this yearSo how did we do?

Well, there is a part of the test which requires rotating objects in 3D and determining which of four figures resembles a fifth. I aced this section … while Laura struggled…. after further questioning , I realized that Laura had inadvertantly answered only half of each question. My smuggness evaporated.

The test revealed no real surprises to me, after all, we will have been married 35 years this year. The fact that Laura prefers masculine faces and I prefer feminine was hardly earth moving. However, we did have a number of similar traits in common… which brought knowing smiles to both of us.

Read Laura’s post and take the test… it’s fun.

UPDATE!

Hmmmm… Laura posted proudly that her brain was 53/47% masculine-feminine…  funny, mine came out a bit differently:

My Brain is What? Okay, maybe that explains why I am the one who invites folks over.

Los Angeles “Avengers” Arena Football Team Stands Tall!

Me under my beloved blanket from Southern Cal

We just got back from a Los Angeles “Avengers” Game… arena football at it’s very best! Karen got tickets for us and it was a great night of real football! First, we started at the Staples Center in los Angeles and we walk in and recieve a free gift! It was a mini Jersey of the starting quarterback Sonny Combie… and it never stopped… with the Avengers scoring over 50 points everyone was treated to a coupon for a free burger at Carl’s Junior and a free Shake at Weinerschnizel! The cool word here is FREE!!!!

We drove home to San Luis Obispo… and I had to show off my new Southern Cal Blanket with Tommy Trojan… munching my favorite salad… and relaxing!

Special Thanks to Karen & Karen’s Professor Tamanaha for a great look at the Avengers!

Great Site for Perfume! … Got Guerlain?

wonderful Guerlain samples

My daughter Karen found a great site to buy perfume… or at least to buy affordable samples. Now, with three daughters, a wife and a zillion female relatives… I have tried to keep up with all the new products that have flooded mankind in the past dozen years.

Frankly, often there is nothing special about many of the ‘celebrity perfumes’… I mean, Paris Hilton’s actually has ‘pheromones’… but the scent makes a woman smell cheap… but maybe that’s the point.

I have always enjoyed women who wear perfumes from the famous House of Guerlain. Interestingly enough, an internet site offers a ‘sampler’ pack of some of their most well known…includnig: Shalimar, Champs-Elysees, Mahora, Samsara… and my personal favorite… Mitsouko. Check it out … only $40 or so.

Your Mother is soooo Wrong…

old nasty and bitta muthas

Once apon a time there was a mother, who was saddened by all the death happening in Vietnam, so with the help of her friends she formed a group to show her displeasure.

When the war ended, with nothing to do, she decided to focus her energy combating something she clearly did not understand and feared… science and technology. Nuclear power is soo bad, all the mullahs tell us. Today, we are dependent on the great oil satans from the middle east… thanks to folks like these… in my humble opinion. Also, I do wonder about groups that don’t have their pictures on their web site.

So , this brings up the question in my mind: ‘was mother always right?’

I am not saying that men… or fathers … are always right, but I am saying that it takes two committed people to raise children. Each parent brings a different perspective, often as a product of our biology rather than just our environment. Men make a difference.

For example, in an article entitled “Your Mom was wrong — Horse play is  an important part of development”, they site a study:

“In an article published in the April issue of Current Directions in Psychological Science, Sergio and Vivian Pellis of the University of Lethbridge reviewed multiple studies involving animals, and found a link between rough and tumble play and social competence.”

Interestingly enough, this brings into question some of the current practices in our schools that label the normal rough and tumble play of boys as deviant , when it is really ‘normal.’ I guess when women look at girls sitting with their hands folded as ‘acceptable’ then anything resembling ‘boyish’ behavior would be shocking and in need of medication. Schools are dominated and run largely by women in K-12. It’s no surprise that folks are looking for alternatives to public schools.

So, Moms, Mothers, Muthas and Mullahs can be wrong… but then, we all really knew that anyway.
