free speech not likely coming to Cal Poly

Cal Poly never changes
"Gosh, it's very hard to put the genie back into the bottle!"

Cal Poly State University is about to select a new President and there are three candidates. (for reference, here’s what  Lou Dobbs of CNN said about the last president)

Actually, the truth is in the details, a select committee from a variety of interests outside of the purview of much of the university and the community did the selection and whittled the short list down to three people of which little is publicly known of them. Searching the candidates for on-line information gives little insight.

However, one of the issues that has plagued the university warranting national attention has been it’s treatment of students. In my opinion, Free speech and other first amendment violations are among the most egregious.

Baring any clarifying statements of the candidates, it might be safe to look at the F.I.R.E. rankings ( Foundation for Individual Rights in Education) of the universities whence the candidates come. This might not be an accurate reflection of any of the candidatel’s personal attitudes, but it does give an insight into their campus climate.

Here are the three universities and their rankings and links to their stories:

University of Cincinnati — RED LIGHT

Wright State — RED LIGHT

Boise State — unranked but with comments

At a minimum, I think these three candidates need a few more questions about what kind of climate they intend to foster for the students and faculty at Cal Poly. However, it sounds to me like 30 years of more of the same.

a hand is a link to someone’s heart

I wanna hold your hand

I noticed that  one of Laura’s blogs “I wanna hold your hand” was getting a lot of interest lately, I recognized it and it made me smile. Laura discussed how it was a simple means of communication and a sign of affection. She also hinted at how some people view it as ‘control’ and ‘oppression’, which might be the case in dealing with a 2 year old trying to run in a crowded airport… but less so here.

Personally, I have always found walking holding hands to be relaxing, a silent form of communication and comforting. Laura said that she had noticed more and more folks holding hands and viewed this as a good sign for relationships and I agree. On reflecting, I do remember when Laura first held my hand, it was on our first date in 1969 at a USC- UCLA football game and she sighed that her hands were cold. I held her right hand with my left as we walked and we both felt warmer and I could feel her pulse….  I knew her statement was ‘a line’… but it was a good one!

Over the years, I have found walking and holding hands to be a link into someone’s heart. Because, if you walk holding hands with someone for 30 minutes, you know all about them.

it’s picnic time

when you get folks together, you have to have room!

In California , the weather is starting to normalize and that means eating outside! This is the time when many people — who haven’t done much cooking all year begin to dust off their recipe card files and cookbooks and get ready to make some family favorites. Baking season is known to start in October, but the barbecues and the smokers are already firing up and this is an entirely different kind of cooking!

For us this means making our own corned beef and pastrami, smoking a salmon or two and cooking various cuts of beef over hickory and mesquite. It is a good time.

Preparation means serving either buffet or family style. Personally, I like to have a separate table just for the food, iced down troughs for the beverages and wine on the table. It’s the old keep it simple system. Personally, home baked rolls ( baguettes) and pies help add some diversion too the meal. And what isn’t a barbecue without garlic bread and your favorite recipe for baked beans ( with a secret ingredient or two from the liquor cabinet)!

Here is a few of what I like to prepare!

So, with summer just around the corner… plan a picnic!

Happy Karla de Mayo

karla's wonderful drawings
artwork by Karla

For those who don’t know this month well, you may not know that this is Karla’s birthday month! Karla has informed me years ago that everyone has a birthday, that one special day each year we celebrate their birth DAY, but since she is special, she gets a birthday all month long! Think of it as a thirty day Hanukkah with a present every day.

Karla has a way of lightening the mood , she makes wonderful drawings to help remind all of us of some important things in life …and sometimes I can’t help but smile, like this little cartoon about one of the common irritants on the road around here.

Happy Cinco de Mayo… and yes, Happy Karla de Mayo ,too!

the autism walk 2010

the walk for autism
the Walk for Autism in San Luis Obispo

Today, we experienced the annual Walk for Autism in San Luis Obispo. It was a nice jaunt around downtown. Everyone seemed to have a good time and there was a genuinely nice festive feeling in the air.

Karla had a great time and we followed our walk with a visit to a store that sold ‘Gogi’ berries, which I am informed — by Karla — are very good for you. While at the store, I discovered a seaweed snack that I couldn’t resist… and Karla ( the official photographer) needed to record my munching for posterity!

I hope your day was as pleasant.
