15 minutes of fame

A lot of things happen in ones life that give cause for pause.

The three pictures above are versions of me with the ‘true’ me on the far right. The middle me is a photo shopped version of my two right sides of my face and the far left is of my two left sides.  These three interesting pictures appear in my wife Laura’s new second edition of Discovering Biological Psychology.

The point Laura is making  is to show that all of us are a bit more expressive on one side of our face than the other and this demonstration makes that point clearly.

So who knew I’d end up as a text book model?

bloggers to be censored?

only $ 19.95 for a genuine vial of STARDUST!
only $ 19.95 for a genuine vial of STARDUST!

It’s always a bit disturbing when any government steps in to regulate an area that previously remained free.

Oh, I know there have been patent medicine salesman selling fraudulent cures, but they have been with us like ‘Jacek’ in a Stargate episode selling fake “stardust” on the net, forever. However, I do wonder, why our government is so interested in protecting us now? Why do they really want to be involved in regulating what is said on the internet? Hmmmm , I wonder, did I answer my own question?

A disturbing first ‘toe in the water’ appeared in Advertising Age with the FTC showing interest in bloggers and their evaluations of consumer products. The FTC wants to protect us by holding certain bloggers liable for their opinions…. ok, this is interesting … where is this going? … and do we really need this?

Although you may not be selling anything more than your ideas, this is something worth keeping an eye on. After all, one loses one’s freedom easiest a piece at a time.

famous bird thief of aberdeen

Seagull has a hankering for chips
Seagull has a hankering for chips

This is the famous alleged bird thief of Aberdeen, Scotland. I can’t blame the poor ol guy, the chips look mighty tempting. Here’s the story as it is circulated: “A seagull in Scotland has developed the habit of stealing chips from a neighborhood shop.

The seagull waits until the shopkeeper isn’t looking, and then walks into the store and grabs a snack-size bag of cheese Doritos.

Once outside, the bag gets ripped open and shared by other birds.

The seagull’s shoplifting started early this month when he first swooped into the store in Aberdeen , Scotland , and helped himself to a bag of chips. Since then, he’s become a regular. He always takes the same type of chips.

Customers have begun paying for the seagull’s stolen bags of chips because they think it’s so funny!”

all oars pulling together

Karla's Snake for Biological Psychology

For those of you who don’t know, Laura has a second edition of her textbook  Discovering Biological Psychology hitting the book shelves and everyone in the family is excited to see her efforts come to fruition.

One of the nice things that happens in our family is that everyone has helped Laura in ways large and small in getting her textbook to press. Whether it has been proof reading, researching, filing…  everyone has tried to help…. all oars pulling together to get the job done. Our daughter Karla came up with an illustration ( as requested by one of Laura’s adopters) that will bring a smile to even the most hardened neuroscientist. The visual shows how orientation changes. Thanks, Karla you made it fun!

Thanks Laura from all of us and Congratulations!

My Mona Lisa Smile

When Laura and her editor wanted a picture of me for their book… I took a big gulp. I mean this is a textbook on Discovering Biological Psychology. This is interesting stuff… some of it is strange… interesting ,but strange, and I wondered where I was going to fit in all of this?

I guess I deserved a little uneasiness as it is a bit of payback. I will rush to her from the kitchen with those words that instill concern, “…taste this!” She’ll always look as though I am offering her something weird like ‘fresh tentacles in licorice sauce’… but then, she always smiles.

Well, like most people ( unless you are Brad Pitt )… I smile more on one side of my face than the other. So, Laura took a picture of me and created three faces… the real me, one face with two left sides (the left side was mirrored onto the right) and the last having two right sides. What resulted was  the three bears: a smiley bear, a medium bear and a reserved bear.

Good luck Laura, your book looks wonderful!
