Cal Poly needs more than a PR makeover

Cal Poly has a lot to learn by doing right
Years ago, I had an opportunity to review one of the first “Yankelovich Monitors” in the 70’s. Daniel Yankelovich is brilliant. I think his strength has always been in identifying trends, not necessarily how these trends can best be used to help your business, political strategy or public relations effort. The best person to apply his observations is the person or company involved.

So, what does Daniel Yankelovich have to do with making Cal Poly better? Actually, he has published in a couple of areas that would help them a lot… if they thought honestly about some of their problems.

The Role of Colleges in an Era of Mistrust. With Isabella Furth.
The Chronicle of Higher Education/Chronicle Review.
September 16, 2005.

Ferment and Change: Higher Education in 2015.
The Chronicle of Higher Education/ Chronicle Review.
November 25, 2005.

The trends and issues faced by Cal Poly appear clearly in these two articles… here are his 10 points ( check out the first article posted above for a further explanation):

1) Avoid ethically neutral or value-free stands, which in a climate of mistrust are viewed as deceitful.

2) Recognize that more is expected from privileged institutions.

3) Recognize that silence, denial and closed doors are almost always interpreted as evidence of bad faith.

4) Do not believe you will be given the benefit of the doubt.

5) Work out your positions on emotionally laden issues in advance and communicate them within the institution.

6) Be mindful that anything but plain talk is suspicious.

7) Recognize that being ‘good people’ and ‘good motives’ are not enough.

8) Respond to the public’s genuine hunger for information.

9) Build Trust.

10) Make a genuine effort to making the institution better than you found it.

I don’t know whether or not Cal Poly can escape the problems that are ingrained in their campus culture… but if they could, this is where they need to start… and here is a starting reading list.

The First Woman to become a Four Star General?

will she be the first women who becomes a four star general?

Lt. General Anne E. Dunwoody of the Army has been nominated to become the first female four star general. General Dunwoody has 33 years of service ( 1975) and has had a number of command positions.

If confirmed by the Senate, she will be the first woman to gain a fourth star ( the first female 3 star general was in 1970). In the armed forces of the United States there are currently 57 active duty female general officers.

Good Luck and hopefully congratulations to General Dunwoody.

what’s on your Bucket List?

unwanted and unneeded advice?

Okay, I have a tendency to give unwanted and unneeded advice… but this isn’t one of those times.

The movie “Bucket list” and the book by the same name is interesting in that they ask the question,” if you knew you only had so much time left in your life, would you do anything different today?” The book explores the ‘Bucket Lists’ of ordinary and extraordinary people. Young folks have accomplishment goals… while, older people have certain housekeeping issues that they want to finish in their lives… but everyone has something… even if it is only perfecting a golf swing.

One blog was even betting as to which of the two actors would ‘kick the bucket’ first… charming.

I guess the best advice I ever heard on this subject… was given to me as a young paperboy by a kindly old gent of 103 : ” I live and enjoy today , but keep an eye on tomorrow in case I am not lucky enough to die in my sleep.”

YOUR space & MySpace

Rogers MySpace

Okay, I finally put up a MySpace page for no other reason than to show the next generation of family members that I could do it too!

Here it is!

I think it has some value for folks that already have web sites of their own because it is a venue by which one generation searches for their friends… add to this Facebook and a young professional’s site is complete. My daughter Karen has links to both of her sites to sites on Facebook and Myspace.

Interestingly enough, MySpace asks you several times what you want your ‘myspace url’ to be … and warns you that it can not be changed! Hopefully this prevents naming a site that one might be a bit embarrassed about later on.
