Coaches as ‘Mentors’

Coach Ron Allice of the Southern California Trojans... Head Track Coach & Mentor
Recently, Laura and I went back to a couple of high school track meets … it is always fun to see ambitious young athletes striving for perfection. What struck me very odd was some of the old feelings of foreboding. Then I saw some familiar track coaches and I realized why. They think the sport is all about them. As ‘Maranda’ said, “Don’t be silly, everyone wants to be us!”

Sports — contrary to folks like Florida’s Urban Myer –should be about athletes and at the high school level should be as much about their future beyond athletics as their future as an athlete.

Coaching should be as much about mentoring and personal development as about athletic performance. I have always respected coaches who can do both… they employ the power of positive coaching and work towards the personal development of the athletes in fields other than their sport. Just like the late great Coach of Grambling University, they are loved by their athletes for reasons beyond their sport.

I see Head Track & Field Coach Ron Allice of the Southern California Trojans in that rare breed of ‘mentoring’ coaches. He definitely has his ‘eye on the prize’, he wants to win, but he supports his athletes to be all they can be in life.

Shop ! Shop! Shop! … but never pay retail!

Karen with her recently purchased Marc Jacobs Bag... very cool

Laura and I had a chance to drive down to see the Southern California Trojans compete in their first home track meet and see Karen proudly show off her new purchase… a Marc Jacobs ‘Hobo’. I am learning what is a ‘clutch’, ‘satchel’, ‘tote’, ‘sholder bag’, ‘flap bag’, ‘baby bag’… and the list goes on. Actually, it’s fun.

Karen and I simulaneously were talking on the phone, instant messagering and surfing the web for a ‘large bag.’ Karen felt she needed a large bag to: 1) carry her lunch or dinner when she was at school 2) carry a second pair of dress shoes when needed and 3) Carry those things that she wanted to carry separately from her bookbag.

We searched the sales! Sometimes, if you look hard… you can find some real gems. Karen has a nice listing of the places she shops on her site… here they are:

Style.com
Fragrance directory
Neiman Marcus
Prada Parfumes
Bergdorf Goodman
Nordstrom
Saks fifth avenue
Lafayette 148
Kenneth Cole
Dana Buchman
Shu uemura

Giorgio Armani

Karen has a larger listing of designers and stores on her blog!

Kristin and I will shop when she gets home… so, I am ‘working on it’… trying to be a little more like ‘Nigel’ and a little less like old dad.

Thanks Jenny Craig….. Closing in on 50 lbs!

42.6 pounds down with Jenny Craig...

It finally happened! I passed up Laura in absolute pounds lost 42.6 on Jenny Craig to 41 something… it doesn’t matter that she is a mere slip of a girl and her percentage is huge… it’s absolute pounds that mattter! ha! I was worried as I ate huge at Karen’s track banquet at USC… on Sunday.

I lost 6 pounds in the weeks ahead of Jenny… so 48 is my real total… but no matter… it was a good week in dropping 6.2 lbs.

Bruins in Troy!

2 Bruin Captains at a Trojan Track Banquet

I’ve seen John Smith around… he’s everywhere track and field … and sports … happens to go. John is a former world record holder in the quarter mile. He’s successful and so is his family…. but he is… well… a “Bruin”. I ran into John at the annual Southern California Trojan Track Banquet where one of his relatives was accepting a prestigious award.

We both got a laugh at the fact that two former Bruin Track Captains were at a Trojan event.

Fight on!
