Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays & Wonderful Football!

Happy Holdiays, Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah.... and Great and Merry Football!

Laura and I tend to send out cards every year that speak to some of the things we all areup to… as they say, ” a picture is worth a thousand words.” Although I am always amused at those who send these great tomes of family successes… you know what I mean… ( in truth, I am happier when folks are doing well )

” Jason was really miffed this year getting cheated out of the Heisman… but his well earned Nobel prize was waiting for him when he returned and Amanda was a little wild this year sharing her underpants with Britney who forgot hers.. but she is settling down after her Oscar… and my Husband Xerxies invented something called ‘fusion’… oh and that silly little award I got from Oprah as ‘woman of the century’… who would have believed it? so all in all it hasn’t been a bad year….. and how are you?”

However, I am willing to endure all of these in order to avoid the ones saying that Missy is finally getting her life together with the father or ‘fiancee’ of child number 4 now that she is out of rehab. Fiancee’? who are you kidding?

Soooo… our card was a ‘sporting theme’ representing all of the Universities in which one or all of us have attended… USC, UCLA, SMU, U of Florida, United States Military academy at West Point, University of Missouri at Rolla…. and Cal Poly.

Enjoy the holidays, enjoy your life

We Love the Southern California Trojans! Fight On!

Karen and

The Southern California Trojans lost yesterday to their cross town arch rivals the UCLA Bruins… I’ll leave it to others to explain what happened (UCLA)… (USC)…but the sweetness of a victory over the Bruins was elusive.

I do — somehow — remember when one special UCLA’s streak of 32 years was broken.

It is interesting to say that none of us started out as Trojans… but we all ended up that way. Karen graduated from the University of Florida and competed her last year of eligibility as a Trojan becoming an All-American and setting USC’s record in the women’s shot (57-07) and I spent a few years working out with many of the athletes while obtaining two masters degrees in business (Beta Gamma Sigma)… and Laura… that’s a special story.

My wife earned all her degrees at UCLA completing her Ph.D. in 1979, but yesterday I saw where her heart really was when I glanced over and saw a tear of sadness falling from her face. She said that ‘SC had been good to Karen and Me…. and… she wanted SC to win! Laura is a Trojan today through and through and that’s the way it often goes.

The University of Southern California is highly selective in admissions, and is tough and uncompromising in their pursuit of excellence… with a loyal alumni! A degree from ‘SC means something today and tomorrow. You may start out attending Southern Cal… but you end up loving it…. and keep coming back.

So, congrats to the Bruins… but remember, ‘SC already captured the PAC 10 Conference Championship.

Fight On!

“Fight on for ol’ SC,
Our men fight on to victory.
Our Alma Mater dear
Looks up to you,
Fight on and win
For ol’ SC
Fight on to victory
Fight on!”

Oh yes, I wasn’t always a Trojan… but …well… let’s just say that was long ago.

Southern California Trojans and UCLA Bruins… aaah the memories!

The game was spectacular with the score in 1969 ending:

USC 14, UCLA 12
our first date... Novemeber 22, 1969
Okay… I got a bit of the flash in the way… but it is quite a memory for me in 1969. No, this was the year after O.J.
Yep, it was also the first year USC employed the talents of ‘Song Girls.” Better late than never.

Here’s how one UCLA superfan tells the story of this game:

1969: USC 14 UCLA 12 SYNOPSIS: “The 1969 game was the first of many bitter disappointments for UCLA. The Bruins led 12-7 when USC faced fourth down late in the game. The USC QB threw a horrible pass that landed far out of bounds and was totally uncatchable. I was sitting in the fourth row and couldn’t see the play, but I saw the ball go over the players on the sideline. But UCLA was called for pass interference and USC went on to win.”

USC pulls off an upset with a 32-yard TD pass with 92 seconds to play. Game had Rose Bowl implications for both teams.
RECORDS: #6 UCLA (8-0-1), #5 USC (8-0-1)
THE LINE: UCLA by 2

The importance of this game was simply… because it was Laura and my first date. I have to confess that this was really the ‘acid test’.Since then, I have discovered that there are women who (gasp!) don’t like football… or don’t understand ‘sports’ (eh?) — as in: ‘he only wants to talk about sports.’

Men, I hope you are listening… when you find yourself with one of these women…. run! Find a woman who knows football… and be happy for the rest of your life!

God's Greatest gift to Man... a wife that loves football!

I even have our first tickets! (Top of blog)

Trojans Clobbered Notre Dame on the field… and in the stands!

this is the way it was... Southern California Trojans... scoring on offense, defense, special teams... virtually everywhere at will
“No greater love a father hath than he who gives up his ticket for his daughter…”

Well, my eldest daughter was in town and it was really great that she came over…. but then… she took my ticket!!! arrggg!

Actually, I was happy that she and Karen and Mom saw the game live…. while, I watched it on the plazma. It was great… but not quite the same.

Interestingly enough, a few Notre Dame fans showed up and occupied the seats in front of my crowd… the only trouble was … it wasn’t their seats. So, when the real ticketholders arrived… a ‘problem’ arose whereby the apparently several drunk “Irish” fans threw the greying middleaged Trojan ticketholder over three rows down… not a smart thing to do in a sea of crimson. Only his dignity seemed to be hurt. The cops and security arrived quickly and escorted the guilty out… but thanks to Kristin’s quick thinking in containing the situation… no one got too bruised.

Dad'll be sold on ebay long before Laura lets go of this! The day started off in great fashion as Karen presented her mother with a superfans’ greatest treasure… and autographed football. Not just any football or just any autograph… but a Southern California Trojan Football signed by USC Atheletic Director  and the Trojans’ first Heisman Trophy Winner Mike Garrett!

So, as far as football weekends go… this one was okay… could it have been better… hell, yes!… I could have been there!

However, the ‘raison half of me” realizes that given the bad manners of some of the Irish fans… it was just as well I wasn’t there… well, I am glad Kristin was able to handle things and not me.

Here’s a couple of great stories on THE game!
