On Vacation in Hawaii!

take some time to smell the hibiscus!
Sometimes, it is just important to take some time and kick back.

Although I am going to Hawaii to ‘catch some rays’… more importantly, I am there to lend my support for my daughter’s change of command ceremony. She is a departing company commander after 25 months.

Travel, Business and Education in China!

Business Cards are fundamental for travelers
My daughters have been planning their trip to China (Beijing to be exact) for some time. They plan to see all of the great attractions: the Great Wall, the Square, the Forbidden City and a martial arts theater. Karen’s classmate ‘Han’ suggested that she frequent a certain ‘secret’ alley of shops known to the locals… but to keep an eye on changing prices!

The original intent of the trip was in conjunction with a presentation Karen is giving at the Reputation Institute. However, this has evolved into a grand experience for the two of them.

As a parent of adult children, my participation is limited to researching great things to see and do… which is fun… although I have to — sadly — remind myself that I am not the one going! I guess that’s what parents sometimes do… wave at their adventurous offspring as they meet the world.

I did suggest that there is a new culinary school to visit, plus the names of some interesting restaurants… but then, they don’t have all the time in the world.

Have fun!

Yep, they even have their Business Cards!

Desktop Psychology

Laura and I at the Ronald Reagan Ranch!

I always have found it a window into someone’s world to see what they place on their desktop. I am sure there is an entire Psychology surrounding the choices people make from the simple to the complex and the impersonal to the very intimate.

For me, what I place on my desktop has got to make me smile.

My desktop has had pictures of family, our travels, family events of significance, and great cuisine we’ve made. The common variable in all of this…is… family.

The picture above is of Laura and I at the ranch of Ronald and Nancy Reagan.

It makes me smile.

Delicious Recipes from Africa

AfriChef and his recipes!

Michael Tracey is a South African who loves the many and varied cuisine of Africa. On his site and in his e-book (available on-line), Michael produces some of the familiar and unusual. Check it out!

From the site:
“Some of the recipes contained in the Afri Chef African Recipes cookbook are the same as those eaten and enjoyed by Africans many years ago. Except in limited instances, where fresh vegetables have been substituted by canned, these African recipes stay true to the originals…”

In love with Calligraphy

fun with Chinese Caligraphy
Calligraphy really is an art unto itself.

Everyone in our little family enjoys expressing themselves in the arts: music, paint, sculpture and — of course — cooking. However, with Karen planning a conference presentation in China, it has unleashed the budding artist in all of us!

Most travelers who plan to be in China for any time are encouraged to adopt a “Chinese name” to aid in the cultural transition, which is a good thing. Some names sound easier to the western ears than others. Fortunately, I think ours sound fairly nice.

Here’s an interesting site which allows for some translation of your name and will even present your first name as a Calligraphy on one of a few paintings. A bit of fun!
