Captain Jack Sparrow and his Pirate blog!

Outside of the critics — which tend to be be a scurvy lot — everyone loved the latest edition to the Pirates of the Caribbean legacy! Karen watched Captain Jack get rescued from oblivion in a huge theater in Capetown South Africa, Kristin watched it from the comfortable shoals of Oahu and we watched it in theater 4 in Arroyo Grande.

Afterward, we all had considerable debate as to whether or not there will be a next Pirates movie… supposedly a hint was given at the end of the credits so I guess — like always — we’ll just have to see it again!

Captain Jack can read and write and BLOG!!!

If you haven’t been on Captain Jack’s Blog… you just gotta check it out! Lots to see and lots submitted by true fans! I especially liked the picture of the Captain and his Dad along with a short swabby wearing a Stones shirt!

Thar be sequels in yar future, matey?

Super Tasters & “foodies”

Krudo, Ostrich, Crocodile, Springboek and other yummy things

Here I am on a Jenny Craig Diet and my daughter sends me these wonderful pictures of meals from South Africa. The dinner above features Krudo ( a kind of deerlike creature), Crocodile, Springboek (antelope like) and Ostrich! The lemons don’t tempt me… but the rest looks fantastic! After all, Karen has pointed out that I am a ‘foodie’ (someone who has spent a lot of their career in and around the food industry)… but I do enjoy food… and just possibly more than most people for reasons that are becoming more understood.

My wife Laura discussed something about ‘super tasters’ in her Bio Psychology Class. Super tasters are folks who can literally ‘taste’ more from their food because of the increased density of taste receptors on their tongue. After some checking, it appears that my daughters and I are cursed or blessed with this affliction. It’s like everyone else in the world tastes in color while we taste in high definition. This has always made dieting a challenge for me and I have sought out the boredom of monotonous diets to counteract the fireworks presented by many new, exciting and interesting dishes. I have found that variety adds to my waistline while monotony doesn’t.

Are you a super taster? Take the test!

Karen has earned the the unsurprising ( to me ) reputation for being willing to try new South African dishes. She — like the rest of us — loves to try new things. This is no surprise to those of us who really enjoy the ‘taste’ of our food…

Chocolate Confection in South Africa

Chocolate and confectionery delights have always been one of my favorite things to savor. Karen mentioned that in South Africa she found a few items that might even perk my interest and I wondered what they could be?
A few of the many goodies available ni South Africa

So I checked around and found a blog or two that listed some of the names:

“From Chappies and Wicks to Super C and Sugus, Peppermint Crisp to Lunch Bar, Tex Bar to Chocolate Log, Beacon Slim Slab to Caramello Bears, Sweetie Pie to Holey Moleys. They are all there to tempt the sweet tooth.”

Another blog talked about: “Kit Kats, Jelly Tots, Sweetie Pies, Nik Naks, Peppermint Crisps, Cadbury, Top Deck, Bar One, Bubbles and Pine Nuts.”

Obviously some of the items I was already familiar and I was interested to see how well Cadbury and Nestle’ had been embraced in South Africa. Nestle’ has quite a site describing their offerings.

I think Karen is trying to tempt me.

South Africa

Karen is in South Africa

My daughter Karen is in South Africa and trying to get her arms around the issue of ‘jet lag.’ And although she has not been to this part of the world before, she definitely came prepared:  baggage that is virtually indestructableeye masks & travel pillow  for sleeping on planes and a phone that will definitely operate in South Africa. These may sound like simple things, but is amazing how many experienced travelers make their journey that much more difficult by forgetting to plan ahead. I am sure Karen will write something  on her blog  about all that is going on.

Karen has a lot going on in the months ahead… but she sounds enthusiastic and excited about the  new South Africa. Afterall,  Cape Town Fashion week  is not all that far off!

As for me, I discovered the best phone rate to  South Africa is on IDT  and all incoming calls to Karen are free…  and we had our first 20 minute conversation for $4. Even Dads need to hear from their girls.

Karen in London

Welcome to Heathrow Ariport

Thanks to the internet we can all keep better track of our families and keep in touch.

My daughter Karen has just arrived in London and I am sure she is making her way around the shops and inspecting the ‘duty free’ stores for her return. But aside from the shopping, there is always a sense of history and adventure in seeing new sites and new people. England is one of the many ancestral homes of our families, but being Americans, we are a mix of many great peoples. Karen and Kristin are keeping track over the areas each has traveled and Karen was trying to lay ‘claim’ to the North Pole because she flew over it, but Kristin said she must stand — not fly — on it first.

Kristin is very well traveled, although I am sure she would have liked to visit Iraq, Kuwait and the Gulf States under better circumstances. However, she earned a perspective few have.

So, the internet allows me to share and enjoy some of their lifes… even if I am at home.
