Cal Poly University’s Administration has Problems… again

sheldon awardee President Warren BakerIt goes without saying that some people learn from their mistakes… then others never learn… while other people know what’s right but do wrong anyway.

Cal Poly’s administration has a real problem. Sometimes one has to hit the mule in the forehead with a two by four just to get it’s attention. Maybe this is again one of those times.

Historically, Cal Poly has had trouble with freedom of speech issues and although this is not news to anyone following the academic community in America… it just seems to be happening all the time at Cal Poly.

Today, FIRE ( the organization supporting Academic Freedom in America) came out with a huge commentary on Cal Poly San Luis Obispo…. and it wasn’t good. Here’s a small excerpt:

“Unfortunately, Cal Poly is at it again. This time, the victims are the students in the improvisational comedy troupe Smile and Nod, who posted a constitutionally protected image on flyers advertising their upcoming comedy show….According an October 25 article Mustang Daily, theatre department officials began removing the flyers because the flyers could be “construed as racist.” Smile and Nod was required to remove remaining flyers, “send a formal apology to all students via the Mustang Daily, and participate in a sensitivity meeting with faculty and staff from the theatre department and the ethnic studies department.””

We’ve all been here before… this sounds like exactly the same sort of thing that landed them in Federal Court the last time… and Cal Poly lost and was savaged in the National Press.

It is inappropriate for our universities to abridge the rights we have in this country simply because they do not agree with what is being said. No one has a right to not be offended. The best action is to counter free speech that you disagree… with free speech of your own.

White House Chef

the White House Chef
The book “White House Chef” is a remarkable look into two administrations in a way that few people could visualize… from the epicurean needs of the First families.

Walter Scheib was the executive chef of the White House under two administrations: President Clinton’s and then into President Bush’s Administration.

Chef Walter Scheib may have suffered the affliction many of us do in the presence of celebrities… he was impressed by everything… except — fortunately for him — that which was right before his eyes in the kitchen. To his credit, he modernized everything in his purview…. adding a truly American accent to what, how ,where and why things were served at the White House.

The book never set out to be a ‘kiss and tell’ opus … although there are plenty of those if one wants to read about any administration. However, Chef Scheib’s book provides an excellent insight into a man, his obvious love of his work and his ability to adapt to the changing needs and tastes of those he served.

There are also plenty of ‘stories’ about what happened to Chef Scheib as the top ‘toque’ and WHO was hired next… but politics may have something to do with it as someone wrote that Walter may be remembered in history as “Hillary Clinton’s Chef.”

An enjoyable read on a rainy day!

Although it may be a celebrity worship of my own… I was pleased to have an autographed copy… Here’s  Chef Walter Scheib’s Site!

ISLAM: What the West Needs to Know

My letter to the San Luis Obispo TribuneWell, here in little San Luis Obispo at a place called Cal Poly, we had a thing called ”
Islamo-Fascist Awareness Week.”

All across our nation’s colleges we had folks demonstrating against the right of other folks to see this movie or speak… or think… or maybe even exist. History does tend to repeat itself…. if we are all not careful.

In any event, it was a happening and many people left feeling surprised about what they had learned… and shocked by what they thought they knew about Islam and what they didn’t.

On a completely different and totally unrelated topic…. Al Queda has redirected some of their energy back into the internet as reported by one news agency:

“On Sunday, Nov. 11, al Qaeda’s electronic experts will start attacking Western, Jewish, Israeli, Muslim apostate and Shiite Web sites. On Day One, they will test their skills against 15 targeted sites expand the operation from day to day thereafter until hundreds of thousands of Islamist hackers are in action against untold numbers of anti-Muslim sites.”

So why November 11th? Maybe it has to do with our Veteran’s Day… or maybe it has something to do with rekindling of the sputtering glory of the Ottoman empire:

“In the Treaty of Szitvatorok (Nov. 11, 1606), the prewar boundaries were confirmed, and for the first time the sultan accepted the Habsburg emperor as his equal and ended his payments of tribute for northern Hungary.”

As the old Spanish saying,” it is better to die on your feet than live on your knees.”

Islamofascism or Islamophobia? You decide.

Islamofascism discussion at Cal Poly
Thanks to no small efforts in the past by organizations like FIRE, Cal Poly students, faculty and the larger community were given the rare opportunity to listen to an alternative point of view… Greg Davis author of “Islam What the West Needs to Know.”

Dr. Davis’s thesis is that Islam is more than just a ‘religion’. It is a geopolitical entity that threatens western civilization. His film is spiced with interviews and ‘exerpts’ from Islamic scripture that are quite challenging.

Here are a few pictures and links from the event at Cal Poly.

It was very sobering.

FINAL SCORE: Rush $2,000,000 and Democrats $0 ?

the Senate Rush for Charity
It was very clever the first time I heard about it… what someone might call a great ‘spin’.

The Left aisle of the Senate decided to write the station boss of  Rush Limbaugh  to protest remarks they felt were a slap to our soldiers and gathered a number of signatures to a letter.
oh, i betcha wish you didn't sign the letter now?
Well, the letter appeared on ebay with the proceeds being donated to a worthy charity founded by former Marines and law enforcement folks… last I looked the last bid was over $800 k… and the only question remains is whether or not it will go over 1 million!

Amazing! Ooooops! I just looked again and with 12 hours left it is now over $ 2 million. I guess the democrats can actually do something that benefits America’s children afterall!
