Up Coming Graduations… at Southern Cal & Ted Koppel

Fight On for USC!To be honest, there have been very few graduations i have ever attended. Some of the reasons are typically male… I wasn’t around.

When my eldest daughter Kristin was graduating from West Point, I was coaching at the California State High School Meet. Now, don’t groan… my middle daughter Karen was competing on the same day and I stayed and coached — while Mom went to West Point.

Not that I have attended many of my own graduations. I missed my two graduate degree festivities except for a small Beta Gamma Sigma ceremony the day before at Southern Cal.

This time it will be different. I will at long last see a Southern Cal Graduation as Karen recieves her Masters in Strategic Public Relations. Interestingly enough, Ted Koppel will be the Commencement Speaker in the main ceremony.

This will be fun … I will be coming home.

“Ilse…. but we’ll aways have Paris and Katie and MSNBC”

And the weeeeener is.......

A funny thing has pulled virtually all Americans together… and that is a ‘distaste’ for Paris Hilton. This overshadows the bovine antics of Katic Couric ( who in an unusually weird ethical twist seemingly won’t cover any ‘news’ about Paris) .  Many Republicans are heaping on the high partisan MSNBC…. which is no surprise to me … I had my own publicized battle with an MSNBC ‘Newsy” and lets just say… I won, he lost and soccer still sucks.

Anyway, if ‘Weenie’ awards (the full one incher) need to be given here’s mine:

  • Paris Hilton for “Baby Needs to be spanked”
  • Katie Couric for ” I need to learn how to bake cookies and care for my family and stop worrying about what my daughter discovers about me on the Internet”
  • And finally the coveted “Dan Rather Award for Objective Journalism” to the supporting cast and clowns of MSNBC News.

the “Fifi” Award is Coming…

What is your name....

The 2007 “Fifi Awards” will be held May 31st at the Winter Garden of the World Financial Center in New York City.

The awards are a way of recognizing all those who have achieved in the fragrance industry, including those involved in retailing, packaging and advertising and promotion. 35 years have passed since the first awards which were described :

“The first Awards Ceremony, attended by only 250 industry members, was held in the Grand Ballroom of The Plaza in New York. There were only seven awards and Chanel No 19 won for “Most Successful Introduction of a Fragrance.”

The Fifi award finalists have already been announces and you can discover who they are on Fragrance.Org. Let’s just say, there are no real surprises, except for those who actually win!

By the way, one of my favorite light operas is ” Die lustige Witwe ” or the “Merry Widow”… played best on screen by Jennette MacDonald and Maurice Chevalier . Janette MacDonald played “Fifi” and as seen in the phot above putting on the final touches… Fifi is an award… but it has another meaning to me.

Fight On! USC-UCLA Track Meet!

USC and UCLA 2007 Track And Field Press Conference!

Very few track meets pit one great team against another now-a-days and this is unfortunate… most meets feature many schools together. However, the USC-UCLA dual meet has always been a historical event… and competing in it retains city bragging rights…. forever. When alumni meet years later… they will always ask,” how did you do in THE dual meet?” Some folks will say,” I never lost… or it took me four years to win one…”… but everyone KNOWS who did what and when… also WHO didn’t.

Last year, Karen PR’d in 3 events winning the Shot Put at 57-07.5. The key word in the entire sentence is that ‘she won.’ She also left as the Trojan record holder.

I participated in the meet in my time and won… although I was on the other side as the Bruin recordholder for roughly 10 years or so. It was always so much better to meet alumni when you won. However, I picked up my two masters at Southern Cal… and that always ment a lot to me.

The latest press conference brought out a lot of ‘talk’… but the match-ups are set and all that is left is the meet. USC’s take on the meet. It’ll be a fun meet to watch.

Fight On!

Buying Books or Sending books to our troops in Iraq

a group of avid book readers in Iraq

I have always found it interesting in seeing what people enjoy reading when under pressure… recently, one of my favorite on-line stores ABEBOOKS.COM wrote just about that… they even provided a list of the types of books that Westerners in Iraq — be they civilians or military — bought while they were there.
Most of the books aren’t too different from what the rest of us read, although I don’t know how many translation books anyone buys… say English -Ukrainian or English- Turkey… but Harry Potter is one of the big sellers…. as are practical books on military issues. Here’s a list of some of the books… but check the site for a more complete listing!

Books of Fiction

The Catcher in the Rye, JD Salinger
·  Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, JK Rowling
·  Lonesome Dove, Larry McMurtry
·  Mostly Harmless, Douglas Adams

·  The Devil’s Guard, George Robert Elford
·  The Unwanted, John Saul
·  The Alchemist, Ken Goddard
·  Apollyon: The Destroyer is Unleashed, Tim LaHaye
