In a previous post, I alluded to the fact that I was being sued for what amounted to exercising my constitutionally protected free speech in a matter of public interest. CalCoastNews.com covered this in a recent story entitled ” Blogger Wins Free Speech battle, Cal Poly Dean Loses.” Here is pictured the ‘tentative ruling’ … which became the final ruling.

Cal Poly has had a long history with FIRE. Some even say if Cal Poly hadn’t decided to dig in their heals on a case of a student posting a flier for an approved speaker… FIRE may have not developed such early traction on the protection of free speech in American colleges and universities. There is no doubt they are on a roll!
FIRE continues to evaluate every university on the basis of first amendment, including issues of how protected free speech is handled on campus. FIRE designates a simple Red-Yellow and Green light to each university to signify the university’s support of the first amendment. There is a simple scale: Green is good and Red represents a very unfavorable climate for students in the area of speech. There are many great stories of authoritarian administrations and their virtual chamber of horrors. Nonetheless, Universities are not without humor, some going so far as banning the consumption and/or flagellation of a banana publicly in a sexual way. Unfortunately, other Universities have been far more draconian, some forcing students out of their dorms … with at least one living in their car during a cold and snowy winter … all over issues that were constitutionally protected. It goes without saying that the universities involved didn’t win these issues and paid off with the hard earned money of the taxpayer.
On college campuses, it is never the administration or the majority that needs protection, it is always the minority voice. Cal Poly has come a long way from it’s RED light days and currently sits at a YELLOW light. There is hope on campus that with a new president and a new administration tone, that maybe, Cal Poly will be a GREEN light university.
Greg Lukianoff coming to Cal Poly February 7th is a very good sign.
I first experienced Cafe Roma in San Luis Obispo well over 20 years ago… and it keeps getting better and better! Laura and I enjoyed our lunch today and the experience was extraordinary! Everything was wonderful… but the dessert was simple yet elegant. Cafe Roma’s bread pudding topped with a wonderful scoop of ice cream and what seemed like a caramel rum sauce. yummmmmmmm
If you have the opportunity to come to San Luis Obispo, stop and smell the roses at Cafe Roma… you will be very happy you did.
Quando le mie figlie a venire casa questo Natale, ceneremo tutti al ristorante “Cafe Roma”!
The California Mid State Fair is something most locals look forward to each yea and no one enjoys it more than Karla. She particularly loves riding the carousels endlessly, so we bring plenty of loot. She also practices all year for the dart exhibits and raises a few eyebrows as she threw three darts hitting two baloons each! She won a lion and a cloth rose!
Just to show her sisters that she was brave, she held a ‘gator.’
As for me, I was happy it just wasn’t over 100 degrees this year!
My daughter Karen first turned me on to FLIPBOARD; but unfortunately for me, at the time, flipboard was swamped! It was like a million people trying to rush through a very small door… and they put me on their waiting list! Today, I was sent a kind email saying that my turn came up… and I rushed to the iPad to log it all in!
With Flipboard you can read all of the social media sites you wish to keep up on! For me that is twitter and facebook! On facebook, I can keep up with friends and family… and then follow a small group of friends and other culinary folks on twitter!
However, iPad jealousy is a sad thing! The critics of the iPad sound all too much like the folks who originally dissed the personal computer, the lap top and the smart phone. Some people just hate technology and the social connectivity that it offers all of us. Some understand that information is power and they really don’t want us to share and connect… let’s face it, some folks just don’t want you to have fun! In the meantime, flipboard for ipad is a wonderful addition to the social media experience!
