alter egos on facebook

MyAlterEgo

Our family is fascinated with technology of all kinds. We have interacted through a variety of technology that is amazing in its evolution!

Personally, I have never used an alias either for email or for internet games… it never struck me as very ‘honest’… it doesn’t pass — as Karen says — the transparency test. However, I have learned there are plenty of ‘innocent’ alter egos on the game sites and on one of our favorite hangouts… FACEBOOK.

I was playing an on-line game on FACEBOOK called Mafia Wars and had my head handed to me by one of the more experienced players. He must have taken pity on me as he gave me a couple of ‘hot’ weapons and some ‘advice.’ First thing I need to do was to open a second Facebook identity and let this ‘alias’ do many fund raising tasks for me. So I thought I’d give it a try and … sure enough it is working wonderfully….

So, I chose an alias. As a young child growing up, I enjoyed the various heroic stories of the magnificent Spartans. King Leonidas met the Persians at about my age… no spring chicken … and I thought I would tip my hat to him by adopting his famous name. I noticed an interesting phenomenon in this game among young male gamers who adopt the picture of what they might call a ‘babe.’ WHY? Well, part of the strategy is to build a powerful mafia family and honey attracts bees.

Anyway, there is no real deception as to who I am on the game as I am ‘fully disclosed’… but it is an interesting study in how people act in on-line games.

out of the google net for now

"My goo-goo-googly eyes!"

How long I have been fighting Google?  I won’t go into all the details, but let’s just say that anything I blogged about  Cal Poly San Luis Obispo never made it into their search engine and I checked regularly… plus I have an automated search to do those sorts of things.

Anyway, today is quite a day as one of my less than complementary blogs about Cal Poly appeared on Google. I am not ready to break out the ‘good stuff’… but it might justify some stuffed Greek grape leaf rolls smothered with Greek yogurt and a shot of Ouzo… it is lunch after all.

One does look for reasons why things like this happen? I had thought maybe I got swept up with the sea of ‘conservative bloggers’ being banned… and maybe it was my recipe for bread pudding... a favorite of conservatives world wide that was the real give away?

I look to being banned again, because I am making a good down home southern favorite of the family… Turgoosen! What can be more controversial? Turgoosen is one of those layered bird meals consisting of a chicken, duck (2) and   goose meats bound within the frame of a deboned turkey… and each with it’s own stuffing! It looks like a turkey but slices like a meat roll with rings of stuffing! Just in time for Christmas.

Since all of this trouble with Google, I have become reliant on  BING... the search is better and they don’t hassle me.

a Los Angeles Vacation

00 SCvacationVacations don’t have to be exotic, expensive or bound to long away locations. However, vacations do need to take you away from what you are doing and put you somewhere else to experience another of what life has to offer.

Karen had plans and we thought about tagging along and seeing an intersquad scrimmage among Southern Cal’s Trojan football team. It was a nice sneak peek into the world of Trojan football and a time to revisit SC again. We stayed at the Radisson just off campus giving us a chance to visit and eventually end up at the old hangout ‘el Chollo’s’... Los Angeles’s finest Mexican restaurant.

I am sure the coaches saw sparks of brilliance and some things they are going to work on… but from my perspective there was enough there to worry most people. I would have liked to see the quarterback run more… but that’s just me.

It was all fun!

california midstate fair and researching apple flaps

Mom & Dad at the midstate fair in Paso Robles, California

The California Midstate Fair in Paso Robles is always a delight. Although it is a far cry from the Houston Livestock and Rodeo show that left such a big impression on me as a young man, it still has it’s charm. Everything from the ‘pig races’ , the judges sampling local preserves and cookies to the concerts and animals makes it feel like an old fashioned country fair. I love that!

My continuing research into the history and tradition of ‘Dutch apple flaps’ is on-going. I finally consulted with a couple from the Netherlands who we have known for 32 years on a ‘definitive’ recipe. They were kind enough to send 3 variations. Added to this two cookbooks Karen brought back from Amsterdam, the internet and plain ol trial and error and I think I’ll have something worked up before Karen comes to visit in the middle of next month!

Back to picking apples!

virtual travel to Greece in music and food

Music and Food ( not necessarily in that order) are a window into cultural life.
Music and Food ( not necessarily in that order) are a window into cultural life.

Our daughters and Laura recently returned from Greece with a pictures and tales of their adventures that kept me entertained. I have always loved Greek food starting from my youth and I have tried to seek it out in my travels with more or less success.

Music of Greece

So I watch their slides, listen to music , drank wine (yes, quite good now-a-days and the Greeks make a nice Merlot), cooked up wonderful food and enjoy my Baklava... so I closed my eyes and  I am almost there!
