documentary film maker Michael Malone to come to Cal Poly

American Carol

When I heard rumors that documentary film maker Michael Malone was coming to Cal Poly, I wondered if he was going to stay at the fabulous Hussein-Baker Grand Martyr Hotel? In any event you can only imagine the disappointment when the faithful realized he wouldn’t be coming as he was filming in the ‘island paradise of Cuba.’

However, Cal Poly is in the news again!! The stars truly come out in the documentary “Indoctrinate U.”  The Documentary Channel will be showing “Indoctrinate U” next week as part of its “Controversy in America” series.

Happy Birthday, Karen

Happy Birthday, Karen. Yesterday was Kristin’s Birthday and today is Karen’s. Along with our wedding anniversary and Laura’s birthday last month makes for a busy 31 days!

Karen has been a great partner on  Jenny Craig  with Mom and me, and inspired us to join her on  Facebook  with Kristin. Being of an older generation, we have had to ‘invite’ folks to join us. Karen is at the University of Tennessee working on her Ph.D.
The devilish horns of hair seem somewhat appropriate. 🙂

Two Layer Amarula Carrot Cake

Carrots, Pineapple, Apricot, Cream Cheese and Amarula!

Some cakes are destined to become classics. The Simple Carrot Cake is worthy of Klingon Song!

When Karen returned from South Africa after working with ‘Total Media’ a Public Relations firm in Cape town, she introduced us to a variety of culinary offerings: Bobotie certainly was one of the finest, the Brai ( a BBQ), Smoorvis ( a rice and fish dish) and not to be forgotten… Amarula. Amarula is a creamy alcoholic drink ( 20%) that can be used in about everything… inlcuding Karen’s addition of 5 tablespoons in our carrot cake! In South Africa, the Brittish introduced the apricot and that is in there too!

Here’s the recipe!

And in the right size… it can be Jenny Craig Compliant!

If you are on Facebook, you just might receive this extraordinary carrot cake as “Foodie for Yoodie” from the ‘Skinny Chef’!

Family Fun at grandma Char’s

fun and games at Grandma Char's

I believe in the ‘perpetual learner.’ This is the concept that we are forever students… willingly taking in new ideas and experiences and hopefully understanding a bit more of our world. Yep. I learned a lot this weekend.

My mother aka Grandma Char had a fun family gathering this weekend and although I was told I wouldn’t have to cook… here I am running the BBQ! It was only afterwards that my nephew and his bud confesses to being BBQ masters! Hmmm… I was played. Laura and Karen brought Carrot Cake, Apple Pie and Ice Cream and my sister Jennifer donated all the meat and sausage It was wonderful!

One small problem… Laura was kind enough to run home and grab some of my cutting tools… in particular a  Cutco brand knife of which I am becoming very fond.

Karen and I posted all of the pictures on Facebook… they’re public.

a New Phone for Mom

Mom's New Phone

Well, it’s not often than Mom lags in any area of new technology… except her antique phone.

Finally, armed with all of her likes  (full keyboard) and dislikes (touch phone), I found her a phone which will — among other things — allows her to auto into FaceBook.

Now, I won’t have to watch her struggle with her text messages and such.

Happy early birthday, sweetheart.
