Designing your own bottle of 1800 Tequila

Well, the title of this blog is a bit misleading. However, what is fun is that many manufacturers of wines and spirits provide the opportunity for you to design your own label for their product. In essence, you can personalize a sometimes rather impersonal gift.

Most wine and spirits have offered holiday labels for years. these lables provide a place where they would print your name or the name of your firm. However, today, you can find a number of companies that will allow you to upload your own art and this is sensational!

The very familiar  bottle of 1800 Tequila  above appears with a variety of lables I put up: (left to right) the flaming statue at the University Of Tennessee at Knoxville,  my ‘el cid’ paella, our  ‘Chimichanga Legendario’, my 1994 Fatboy Harley Davidson, and a version of one of my many alter egos.

This holiday season, give something a bit more memorable.

Happy Birthday, Karen

Happy Birthday, Karen. Yesterday was Kristin’s Birthday and today is Karen’s. Along with our wedding anniversary and Laura’s birthday last month makes for a busy 31 days!

Karen has been a great partner on  Jenny Craig  with Mom and me, and inspired us to join her on  Facebook  with Kristin. Being of an older generation, we have had to ‘invite’ folks to join us. Karen is at the University of Tennessee working on her Ph.D.
The devilish horns of hair seem somewhat appropriate. 🙂

Palin email Hacker has Democrat link

David Kernell is son of Tennessee Democrat Mike Kernell

What did the father Tennessee State Representative from Memphis and Democrat Michael Kernell say of his son David Kernell  ‘hacking’ Vice Presidential running mate and Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin’s email account?

“I had nothing to do with it, I had no knowledge or anything,” Mike Kernell told the AP last week.

“I was not a party to anything of this nature at all,” he added. “I wasn’t in on this ” and I wouldn’t know how to do anything like that.”

Although I personally think the ‘lady doth protest too much’, I think this quote really reads: “Save me… SAVE ME!!!!” Well, hopefully Representative Kernell this isn’t ‘all about you.’ However, I do wonder why you voted against that  ‘ethics bill’  that  passed  in your state of Tennessee? And why is it we can’t find any pictures of Representative Mike Kernell on the net?

As an aside, I have been impressed with the excellent technological foundation given students at the University of Tennessee. My daughter Karen , a Ph.D. Student there finds something to impress me every day. However, it seems as this minor league hacker should have taken another class or two and the father should be ‘inspecting what he expects’ in his son’s behavior.

Maybe a little time in the military or public service would do him some good.

Great Recipes are Made or Stolen!

Karen & Laura's Blueberry Coffee Cake!I am very proud of my little band of chefs! Laura, Kristin and Karen all enjoy experimenting with new recipes, developing on old proven winners and when all else fails… they act like the pirates they are… and they “steal” one!

Actually, we don’t “borrow” from too many folks as their recipes usually suffer from various inadequacies: too many shortcuts, cheap ingredients, inadequate substitutions or they just stink. Was I ‘over the top here?’

Anyway, one of my family’s favorite items was prepared by a restaurant for whatever reasons left our little town of San Luis Obispo called ‘Hobbee’s’… and now can be found at least in one of my favorite places of my youth… Palo Alto. Forgiving it’s somewhat vegetarian cuisine for the moment, one of their nicer ‘treats’ was a blueberry coffee cake that was… delicious and always worth the trek.

For Some reason, my daughter Karen had never posted her mother’s and her adaptations to this recipe… they didn’t want to share it with ol dad who’s eyes always rolled at the mere hint of it’s baking! However, brought to you through excessive begging on my part… is their version of this great coffee cake!

Karen loves to put  Amarula ( a south African Liquor that reminds me of a nicer Bailey’s Irish Cream) in everything… so I wasn’t surprised to see it in here too!
