Jenny Craig is Working!

Here are things that weigh 70 lbs! This is what I have lost!

Well, the weigh in today was extra special for several reasons. First I have now lost over 70 lbs and secondly, I dropped to 250 lbs. even for the first time.. well… let’s just say, in a very long time.

Pictured above are a few things that weigh what I have lost: a large mackerel , a female mule deer, a pair of wrestlers in the 70 lb. weight class, a large sea bass and a horse shoe anvil! Of course on me, the weight wasn’t as appealing.

I still have a ways to go until  feel like I have made as much progress as I needed to… and the real pain is that Laura lost a lot more than I did this week… but as we guys all know… it is easier for women to lose weight.

Names for Your Baby

Powerful names for accomplished young women

Well, if you’re going to have a boy, you might like to stay away from some of them down home names like… Sue, Sherrill or Pearl. I knew a Sherrill once and he had lots of trouble. Here’s a true story:

(Phone Rings)

Sherrill: “Hello”
Caller: “May I talk to Sherrill LaPorte?”
Sherrill: “Go ahead”
Caller: “er, I mean, the lady of the house, Sherrill LaPorte?”
Sherrill: “got ’em,  what do you want?”
Caller: “Sorry, Ma’am, you have such a … nice… low voice.”

However, for girls, a slightly masculine name or ‘handle’ works out just fine. I never thought that General “Muffy” was a good idea. In choosing a name for your daughter… it really does make a difference and it really does matter… so says this latest study.

In  “Baby Name report card”,  Dr. Albert Mahrabian  says:

“…Names like Katherine, James or Alexander, convey images of success to these names; in contrast, names like Fifi, Didi, Brandy or Trixie evoke images of a hat check girl or a cocktail waitress.”

Laura and I gave our daughters names a lot of thought and here are a few things we agreed:

1) We wanted to give them a reasonable middle name as a ‘back up”

2) One of the names (middle names) should come from a female family member

3) The first name should be warm, positive, strong and should sound nice if preceeded by “General” or “President” or “Mom”.

So, take some time to think about how it would be to grow up with any name….

Plant Adoptions are Easy

Who will look after their plants when they are gone? dad!

I do understand when daughters move away to pursue their lives that sometimes things get left behind. So while Karen is in South Africa having a wonderful time, we’re helping her towards her final move to Tennessee (to work on a Ph.D) by getting her stuff in moving condition.

One item that won’t make it on the move is “Arnold, Jr.” , named after our California Govenor. He — the green plant — will be the only thing staying with us. This is really not a problem. Far too many parents I have met along life’s path have been saddled with unwanted cats, pups, kittens, dogs, fish and an occasional assortment of grandchildren while their offspring go out and ‘find themselves.’ Hmmmm… a plant is a beautiful thing when it comes alone.

Although, I do miss my girls.

My 3 daughters

My three beautiful daughters smoetimes DRIVE me crazy!!!

Certainly, one of my favorite subjects is my family … and having a blog allows me some liberty to express myself to the world. Believe me, I am very happy with the young women they have become… but…

It seems that they do tweak their ol dad from time to time. Karla sends me animations and drawings to show me how much better an artist she is than I am. Karen knows I am on a diet, so I think she delights in sending pictures of the gourmet meals that she is devouring with relish! Kristin has her ways, she likes to send me pictures of her new toys like the Audi above.

Hmmmm… Congrats, Ladies, We’re proud of you.
