Public Service Academy? training or indoctrination?

Some ideas just don't want to go awaySOMEONE suggested the concept of a “Public Service Academy”  Hmmm… although it sounds ‘innocent’ enough, I found one quote unsettling:

“I think just like our military academies, we need to give a totally all-paid education to young men and women who will serve their country in a public service position.”

What is of concern is something about a national academy for the training of all those entering Public Service. By te way, what do they mean by ‘public service’?…. & why do we need this, again? I suspect we are not talking just about Americorp or the Peace Corp… but developing ‘leaders’ for local, state and government office … and activists? Kinda like someone wants a ‘farm team’.

In politics today, many political leaders start off on the bottom rungs by volunteering for committees attached to some local political entity… a city or county. Often, many are asked to participate by local political groups, which is neither all that sinister or surprising. Although this is not necessarily a great system to help develop our future leaders, I am suspicious of making the process too streamlined and too easily manipulated & abused.

PS. By the way, don’t be fooled, this idea has been around before….

What should we expect from Coaches?

the one hour workout.... still works

Years ago, I wrote a  small piece for a Track & Field magazine  that ended up being widely syndicated… and created much controversy among the holy clerics of American track & field. It questioned what they ‘believed’, for them , it was a form of religious heresy.

I have met some wonderful coaches who take a scientific approach to all they do & they genuinely care and develope the young student-athletes in their charge… but there are those coaches who have long since failed to think for themselves and trot out worn cliché’s and continue to quote books written by those even less enlightened than themselves.

Some coaches make up for their intellectual short comings with various ethical shortcuts and by throwing their athletes against the proverbial wall and looking for those ‘who stick!’ … and discarding the rest. Many are as ruthless as they are ignorant. There is no excuse for lapses in professionalism or the toleration of poor character in our athletes or coaches.

It may be hard for a coach to watch a young person ‘dribbling their career down the court’, but this should not be all about the coach’s career. The athlete deserves a prize for playing the game, specifically a real future…. and part of that is an education…. and to leave the university a better person than they entered.

Fairview… Fair Price! Pinotage

Fairview Fair Price! PinotageSometimes its nice to have a simple bottle of red wine… Fairview is an old South African vineyard that is now operated by the folks whose  Goats do Roam. (hint: click on the GDR site and search “Fairview”)

Anyway, the Fairview brand is:

“a wine of quality that will please both palate and pocket.”

Unfortunately, you can buy from their site if you live in South Africa, but — fortunately –there are plenty of folks you can buy from that ship in the USA… including  BEVMO  (on sale right now!)and  Southern Wine.

Another interesting experience was presented to me by my daughter on her return from South Africa… a delightful creamy liquor entitled “Amarula Cream”. Now I do remember the story that my wife told me about Amarula berries from her research days at UCLA (1970’s)… they were one of the few things that got Elephants drunk!

So,  Karen searched the Amarula site , as in many South African wine and drink sites found some wonderful recipes. In particular, she found a carrot cake recipe that is very similar to one we all are very fond of… but with Amarula Cream. So we are adapting our recipe to accommodate… we’ll let you know how it goes!

Why does everything taste so much better when you are on a diet?

Greg Lukianoff’s Free Speech!

Some of my friends are even...er... liberals

Yep, this ol’ boy does like those liberals every once in a while. Especially, anyone who practices what he preaches. Greg Lukianoff is one of those thoughtful, sincere individuals that you can’t help but like.

I first ran into Greg at  theFire.Org.  This is an organization that supports folks who have had their free speech trampled on at any of the major universities in our great country. TheFire.Org has found itself representing many folks including conservative students, faculty and organizations that found them in the liberal cross hairs. He has said that trends change and he’d hate to see the guns turning into the faces of liberals as time rolls on. Greg is into ‘fairness’… what a concept!

I guess, I admire Greg… however, I don’t feel the same about saving folks like Ward Churchill.

So, whether you are conservative or liberal, Greg’s Blog is worth a look.  CHECK IT OUT!

‘Real’ Men

a few good real men and women in Iraq!

Psychologists and feminists try to show how men are changing, being affected by the rising aspirations of women and the widening range of behaviors that are now being loosely referred to as acceptably ‘masculine.’ Unfortunately, too much of this is the wishful thinking of political folks who want to ‘prove’ that men and women really aren’t all that different… and that ‘gender’ is a ‘culturally constructed’ identity. Real men find this all so amusing….as do Real women.

Some people define ‘real men’ as ‘retros’ who cling to traditional values and attitudes regarding masculinity. However, even by the most liberal of interpretations, this still accounts for 60% or so of all the men worldwide. This is not a insignificant group to ignore… or dare I say, it is not an insignificant ‘market.’

Leave it to business folks to show why the understanding of the ‘traditional’ male image is so important today. By appealing to traditional men — called “retros” — in the study, advertisers and marketers are reaching the largest single subset of the male population and these folks will carry a heavy influence on the future.

Leo Burnett — the famous advertising folks whose symbol is an apple ( during the early American depression, it was joked that someday Leo would be selling them rather than giving them away) came out  with a study  that asks the rhetorical question: “are marketers missing real men?” The simple answer is “yes”… with the exception of the great super bowl ads…. but then, beer companies know who buys their products!

Here’s the bottom line on the study:

“…the majority of men surveyed (60 percent) aren’t caught up in this gender debate and live by a more traditional set of standards for assessing their masculinity. This larger group is more focused on defining themselves in the eyes of other men, largely by seeking respect and admiration for being successful in their professional life on one end of the spectrum, or their personal, family life on the other. The study dubs these men on the “Traditional Male Spectrum” as Power Seekers and Patriarchs, respectively, and contends they are largely overlooked by popular culture, the media and marketers.”

So what do I think? Although biology may not be destiny, and that our nature may be shaped via those who nurture us… science is beginning to demonstrate the uncomfortable notion that who we are is determined significantly by our biology. The concepts that gender and masculinity are socially constructed are dissolving and a science based understanding of our true nature is becoming better understood.

Regardless of the future roles of men on the planet, real men will continue to exist, in a large part, because real women will demand it.
